About Rock Hill SC
Though it prides itself on its small town feel, Rock Hill is the largest city in York County and the fifth largest in South Carolina. The city is named for a rocky knoll that railroad workers blasted through to grade a roadbed for tracks around 1852. The knoll was one of the highest points between Augusta, GA. and Charlotte. The city was incorporated in 1870.
Rock Hill is the commercial center of this region, this city is home to numerous businesses and institutions, including the renowned campus of Winthrop University. Some 58,000 people live in greater Rock Hill, which is in the midst of numerous dynamic projects, from the greening of Cherry Road to the establishment of a fifth business park.
York County’s commercial and industrial development patterns are most active near Rock Hill and Fort Mill along the I-77 corridor.
York Technical College offers training and degree programs that prepare their students for employment with major companies. Through the ReadySC workforce training program, the college has formed partnerships with local industries to mold courses around the technical skills needed by these companies. One example of this type of partnership is the Institute of Manufacturing Productivity, a joint effort between the college and local manufactures to provide quality training opportunities for employees especially in the machining and metal working fields.
Winthrop University, a primarily liberal arts school in Rock Hill, offers diverse undergraduate and graduate degree programs with
an enrollment of over 6,300 students.
